safe food storage containers

Is it safe to put “tupperware type” plastic containers in the dishwasher?

I wonder if it’s ok to wash these plastic containers for food storage as well as the yogurt,margarine,creme cheese,peanut butter containers etc…We sometimes reuse these containers or wash them before putting them in the recycling bin. The reason I’m asking is: I wonder if they give off toxic fumes because of the high heat.

the containers that come with food at the grocery store are not intended for reuse and therefore are very subject to leaching chemicals (no fumes, just chemical residue in the food stored in them). plastics that are intended for reuse (gladware, rubbermaid, ziploc) are dishwasher safe but don’t stand up well. actual tupperware – the brand name stuff – all products have been dishwasher safe since 1979 and absolutely no toxins come from these products. my suggestion – rinse out the containers before recycling, don’t put in the dishwasher and don’t reuse. get containers designed for reuse to be safe.
