purchase mre
What brand of MRE’s are the best and how many MRE’s should I purchase for the coming economic disaster?

what else would I need?

I didn’t know there were brands. I bought several cases in the 80s (as part of a larger group. Great deals if you buy the cases by the pallet.) They seem to have an infinite shelf life, I still have the last 4 units in my car for that next blizzard. The self-heating ones cost more.

MREs are useful only if you are traveling and don’t have to actually carry them because they are heavy. For home use you would be better off buying non-perishable items from discount stores.

Most of the world lives on rice and tea. This is fortunate because both are boiled and water quality is often not good. Lay up soy sauce to go with the rice. Balance it with dry beans. Beans supply amino acids which somehow help release nutrients from the rice. Rice is carbs, beans are protein. If you shop around you can get 10 lbs of white rice (I prefer brown but it’s a lot more expensive) for $.50 a lb.

Some things do not keep for long. Flour, oil, honey. But for thousands of years people have been cooking with lard which is cheap and has a very long shelf life.

Years ago in researching backpacking options I discovered a cheap food which has a long shelf life and is high in nutrition and versatile, is egg noodles.

Fish is healthy and comes canned. Mackerel is a dollar a can. Canned veggies are cheap but take up a lot of room. Pasta is $.85/lb and a big can of spaghetti sauce is a dollar.

Salt! Lots of salt (to preserve that road kill :-) Toilet paper (unless you live where there is lots of corn growing :-)

Might want to consider trade items. Modern steel needles are very cheap and irreplaceable. Ammo. Did I mention toilet paper? And don’t forget toilet paper.

While you are shopping, buy a red and a blue bandanna. Not only are they nearly as multitasking as HHG’s towel, when the riots start just put on the color of whichever side is winning and you can escape through the crowds.

Keep a metal/enamel cup (and empty gas can/hose) in your car. When the electricity (ATMs) stop and you need money, set out the cup and either sing or sell jokes. Don’t need a lot of jokes as you can tell the same one over and over at $.25 ea. Also handy for boiling water or collecting wild blackberries in.
