emergency preparedness policy

Have you ever stopped for a moment and thought of how prepared you and your family are for an emergency? Regardless of who you are and where you live, it is important that you know what to do, where to go and whom to call in case something does happen. Here are some practical emergency preparedness tips you and your family should keep in mind:

Know your community
Try to research the kind of hazards that could strike your neighborhood or community. What types of hazards are these? What is the frequency, who will be affected and what are the risks? What is the risk level of these hazards (high, moderate or low)?

If your area is at high risk for a tsunami, for example, that should give you an idea about what you and your community should do to prepare yourselves. Get a hazard map covering your area or talk to local authorities. There should be alert systems in place to ensure emergency preparedness among residents. Find out about the system used in your area.

Ask about the emergency preparedness of your school or place of employment
If you or a family member still attends school, ask what kind of emergency response procedures are in place. At work, find out what kind of emergency plans are being used.

Have a good emergency preparedness plan
The best emergency preparation you can do is to be informed and to think ahead. Draw a basic plan about what you should do in case of an emergency. The plan should include critical information such as a meeting place (in case you’re at different locations), the address and contact information of an evacuation center or safe house and other emergency contact numbers and information about persons you can call for help, etc.

You might also want to draw up a good plan for ensuring the safety of important documents and items such as records, IDs, copies of insurance policies, jewelries, etc. If you have pets, you’ll also have to include them in the plan, particularly if you have to evacuate.

Keep survival kits handy
Stock up on the basic things you’ll need in case of an emergency. A survival kit should contain medication, survival gear, some food and water. Make sure every member of your family has one. Do not wait for something to happen before you grab basic necessities. By then, it will be too late.

Make sure your car is ready to run
Your car should be able to take you where you need to go in case of an emergency. Keep the tank full if necessary or at least have extra gas in a can.

About the Author:

In case of emergency, your family comes first and shelter survival kits will definitely prove to be handy. Carry with you only the most reliable emergency survival kits.

How does the government or a business plan for an unimaginable disaster-a meltdown at a nuclear power plant, a gigantic oil spill, or a nuclear attack? Lee Clarke examines actual attempts to "prepare" for these catastrophes and finds that the policies adopted by corporations and government agencies are fundamentally rhetorical: the plans have no chance to succeed, yet they serve both the organizat...

In the wake of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, executives and policymakers are motivated than ever to reduce the vulnerability of social and economic systems to disasters. Most prior work on “critical infrastructure protection” has focused on the responsibilities and actions of government rather than on those of the private sector firms that provide most vital services. Potential terrorist attacks and the possibility of naturally occurring disease outbreaks have raised concerns about the 'surge capacity' of the nation's health care systems to respond to mass casualty events. GAO identified four key components of preparing for medical surge: increasing hospital capacity, identifying alternate care sites, registering medical volunteers, and planning for altering established standards of care. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the primary agency for hospital preparedness, including medical surge. This is an edited and excerpted edition.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have developed rapidly in recent years and now provide powerful tools for the capture, manipulation, integration, interrogation, modelling, analysis and visualisation of data - tools that are already used for policy support in a wide range of areas at almost all geographic and administrative levels. This holds especially for emergency preparedness and health risk reduction, which are all essentially spatial problems. To date, however, many initiatives have remained disconnected and uncoordinated, leading to less powerful, less compatible and less widely implemented systems than might otherwise have been the case. The important matters discussed here include the probabilistic nature of most environmental hazards and the semi-random factors that influence interactions between these and human exposures; the effects of temporal and spatial scales on hazard assessment and imputed risk; the effects of measurement error in risk estimation and the stratification of risks and their impacts according to socioeconomic characteristics; and the quantification of socioeconomic differences in vulnerability and susceptibility to environmental hazards. GIS are powerful analytical tools in their own right, but what is needed is much more effective communication between the many disciplines, professions and stakeholders concerned - something which this book helps to achieve.
